About The Association of British Calypsonians

The Association of British Calypsonians is a unique organisation, which was formed in 1991. It is the only representative body for British-based Calypso singers and composers in both the UK and Europe.

Since then, ABC has produced a growing programme of activities based on the traditions and culture of Calypso, but with a British focus.

Calypso has had a presence in the UK for nearly 50 years, and ABC's dream is to hear Calypso being played regularly on all major UK and European radio stations - both via live performances and recordings. To achieve this end, ABC has to educate and encourage the development of Calypso via workshops in schools and within the community and you can see today the fruits of such workshops - ABC's first ever Junior Calypso Monarch competition.

Our education programme is intended to encourage wide participation, innovation, learning, and above all, having fun. We hope at a later date, to offer a qualification as well. ABC's programme is to promote Calypso of the highest quality, to develop young people's potential and creative ambitions, delivered by ABC Calypsonians, working in partnership with young people, their teachers and/or youth leaders.
